| A bit of the strange choice for the next single off of the
Pop
album, If God Will Send His Angels had long been dropped from U2's live
performances by the time the single was released. Some have speculated
that the references to Father Christmas and christmas trees lead to this
one being chosen for a christmas time release. The single itself was released
as a double single with MOFO being the second
single of the set. Again, like Last Night on Earth and Please, If God Will
Send his Angels was rerecorded for the single release and differed from
the version found on the Pop Album. The song
was also released on the City of Angels soundtrack at the same time, and
thus some of the singles for this release, and one version of the video
feature clips and images from that movie.
The b-sides for the single featured a rerecording of Slow Dancing, a
song that Bono had written for Willie Nelson, that U2 finally had an opportunity
to record with Nelson. The original version of Slow Dancing which featured
only U2 had appeared as a b-side to 1993's Stay
(Faraway So Close) single.
This single also featured U2's recording of Two Shots of Happy One Shot
of Sad, a song which was written for the late Frank Sinatra, who never
had an opportunity to record it. Rounding out the single was a live
recording of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" originally from the War album and released
in 1983 as
a single. This recording was done at U2's Sarajevo concert in 1997,
on a night where Bono was losing his voice, and the Edge took lead on vocals
on this track. A beautiful, quiet version of the song. |
