Electrical Storm Information

Please keep in mind some of this is pieced together from officially uncomfirmed and sometimes conflicting tidbits of information, news releases, DJs, comments at u2log.com, atu2.com, various mailing lists etc... though we're now at the point where things are pretty concrete.

Here's a guide to help you figure out what you might have for the Electrical Storm mp3s.
Differences in taping this song from the radio and webcasts, as well as various fan edits have made it difficult to track what we are hearing... but there are only three versions real versions out there:

Electrical Storm (BBC Demo Version)
Electrical Storm (4:26 Version)
Electrical Storm William Orbit Mix (Radio Edit) (4:25)

u2world.com has all three mixes in mp3.
u2audio.com has them in real audio for non-broadband users.

Note: What was before thought to be the Album/William Orbit Mix was actually just a misrecorded/broadcasted 4:26 version.

Title Electrical Storm (BBC Demo Version)
Date Played on BBC Radio1 on 08.25.02, mp3 same day.
Source Demo tape aired on BBC Radio1 by Sarah HB.
Sounds "Soft" Rather incohesive, a disjointed, yet cool, solo at the end.
Info The first available version of this song. Some static, the intro seems a bit cut, but overall good quality. Definately a demo version and not a finished product.
MP3
Version
Full Version - 4:27. Usually called demo, may have radio1, bbc, 08.25.02, sarah hb, etc in title. Good sound quality. [download] [download] [download]
MP3
Version
Edit - 4:29. Also called Ulrick mix, clean edit, etc, has the edited intro faded in and some static editing, and a clean chop of the Radio1 jingle in the middle taken out and seamlessly replaced with other audio footage. Apparently has some cool reverb applied to the end. Not for the purist due to the cut instrumentation in the middle behind the announcer. Probably the easiest for casual listening.
MP3
Version
U2 - Electrical Storm - ~4:33. Does not have the beginning cut, has the Radio1 exclusive over it, and less static. The EQ on most is horrible though, way too bassy. Some varied recordings, usually not as good as the one below.

Title Electrical Storm 4:26 Version "Single Mix"
Date Webcast mp3 08.28.02. Radio mp3 08.31.02
Source Electrical Storm Promo CD.
Sounds "Heavy" all guitars are electric.
Info This is the version from the promotional single. It has appeared in various recordings. The first version included a radio introduction which mentions XRT radio in Chicago where it was recorded. This also was available on u2world.com as the William Orbit mix last night, which was not a different mix of the single but instead was a result of some confusion of what the announcer said on the initial broadcast. The promotional CD refers to this as just "Electrical Storm" and doesn't give it the single mix title. To avoid possible future confusion if a mix actually called the single mix comes out, it will be referred to as the 4:26 Version.
MP3
Version
Electrical Storm (4.26) - 4:22. Very good radio quality. Same source of recording as the real Orbit Radio edit below.
MP3
Version
Single Version, Clean Edit, XRT Edit, XRT Clean, etc - 4:21. Has DJ commentary cut out, the actual song is complete. Good webcast quality. [download] [download] [download]
MP3
Version
XRT Version, Single Version, Radio Edit, William Orbit Mix etc - 4:55. Has DJ chatter about Best Of, the Orbit mix, etc. Good webcast quality.
MP3
Version
"Album Version" - 4:19. Wave analysis shows it to be the right audio channel of Electrical Storm 4:26!! Has the same hook as single mix in the verse but with a very delicate feel. The arpeggio reminds me of "A Sort of Homecoming". Poorish webcast quality. [download]

Version
FAKE = "US Radio Mix". Haven't heard it myself but it is supposedly the left channel this time with "crazy, out
of tune gongs throughout the song."

Title Electrical Storm William Orbit Mix (Radio Edit)
Date Played on N.A. Radio 08.28.02. Radio MP3 08.30.02
Source Electrical Storm Promo CD.
Sounds "Dreamy" sounding and much more like a William Orbit track usually sounds - think Madonna tracks from her last album if you want an example of Orbit's work.
Info According to the WXRT DJ, the full version of this will appear on the Best of 90-00 album.
MP3
Version
"Orbit Mix from WXRT" - 4:16. From chicago radio station WXRT, very good radio quality. [download]
MP3
Version
FAKE = Orbit Radio Edit & Orbit Full Length, times are 4:16 and 4:33. Glanville Rock Mix is 4:28. They consist of the 4:26 'electrical storm' vocal part looped over and over...

If there are no direct web links to files, you can try various peer to peer sharing programs.

There are supposedly 5 versions floating around Universal. Here is the discography entry on the promo CD given to radio stations, which contains two of those tracks. An old version of this guide is here, for those that want the extra bit of history and don't mind getting a bit confused.
