| The Fly was released to radio and video in early September
1991. The rumours had been running hot that U2 was releasing a dance album,
that U2 was releasing an album that would be like nothing we'd ever heard
from them before. This single didn't disappoint those expecting something
different. The album would be more recognizable when it was released, but
that was another two months away. The video for this song also unleashed
Bono's character of the Fly to the world.
The single itself featured a song from the score of the Royal Shakespeare
Company's production of "A Clockwork Orange". The entire performance was
scored by Bono and the Edge, but this track is the only officially released
piece of music from that performance. Rounding out the release is
a remix of the Fly which actually features a very different vocal track
than the original version of the song.
Although a predominant song on both the ZOO tours in 1992/93 and the
Elevation tour in 2001, the Fly has not been released in a live version
on any audio release. However, it can be found on the ZOO
TV live from Sydney video and the Elevation 2001
from Boston video releases.
